Who's Beating You Online? Here's How To Find Out!

How to Find Out Where Your Business Stands Online—and Where Your Competitors Are Getting Ahead

You may know your competitors by name. But do you know how your business compares online?

A competitor might have:

  • More Google reviews
  • Better map rankings
  • More keywords bringing them traffic
  • Stronger website content
  • More service pages
  • Better local visibility
  • Active Google Ads
  • A more consistent content strategy

And you may not realize any of it.

That’s why a digital competitor analysis can be so valuable.

🔎 What Can a Competitor Analysis Tell You?

A good analysis doesn’t just tell you who your competitors are. It shows you where they’re gaining visibility and where your business may be missing opportunities.

1. Who Is Showing Up When Your Customers Search?

One of the first places to look is Google.

Search for the products and services your customers are looking for.

Who appears?

More importantly, who keeps appearing?

If the same competitors consistently show up in Google Maps and search results while your business doesn’t, that’s important information.

It could mean there’s a gap in your local search visibility—and an opportunity to improve your map rankings.

2. Who Has More Reviews?

Reviews are another major piece of the puzzle.

Look at your competitors’:

  • Number of reviews
  • Average rating
  • Recent review activity
  • Review responses

A business with hundreds of recent reviews is sending a very different signal to potential customers than a business with only a handful.

But the bigger question is:

How does your business compare?

3. Who Is Showing Up for More Searches?

This is where things can get interesting.

You might think you only compete with a handful of businesses. But online, your competition can change depending on what someone searches.

Your business may rank well for one service but disappear completely for another.

Meanwhile, a competitor could be appearing for dozens—or even hundreds—of searches that bring potential customers to their website.

That’s the kind of information that’s difficult to see by simply looking at your own website.

4. What Does Their Website Have That Yours Doesn't?

Your competitor’s website can reveal a lot about their marketing strategy.

Do they have dedicated pages for each service?

Do they create helpful content?

Are they targeting specific cities or service areas?

Do they answer common customer questions?

Are their calls-to-action clear?

A competitor doesn’t necessarily need a “better” website to outperform you.

They may simply have more of the right content in the right places.

5. Are Your Competitors Investing in Advertising?

Search for your most important services and pay attention to the businesses appearing in paid results.

If competitors are consistently running ads, they’re putting money behind their visibility.

That doesn’t automatically mean you should do the same.

But it raises an important question:

What are they promoting—and why?

Looking at their advertising alongside their organic search presence can give you a much clearer picture of their overall digital strategy.

6. Who Is Actually Marketing Consistently?

Look beyond Google.

Check out your competitors’ social media, content, branding, and overall online presence.

Are they:

  • Posting consistently?
  • Showcasing their work?
  • Educating potential customers?
  • Promoting specific services?
  • Building a recognizable brand?

You may discover that a competitor isn’t necessarily doing one thing exceptionally well.

They’re simply doing a lot of small things consistently.

And those things add up.

The Most Important Question: Where Do You Stand?

This is where competitor analysis becomes valuable.

You don’t need to know everything your competitors are doing.

You need to know:

Where are they ahead?

Where are you ahead?

Where are you missing opportunities?

And what should you do about it?

Because looking at competitor data is only the first step.

The real value comes from turning that information into a strategy.

That might mean improving your Google Business Profile, strengthening your map ranking, creating better website content, targeting new searches, generating more leads, improving your branding, running ads, or building a more consistent marketing strategy.
